Single Paradiddle-diddle

PAS rudiment #19 · Diddle rudiments

R L R R L L
Single Paradiddle-diddle drum notation with sticking

What it is

Two singles and two doubles, six notes. Unlike the paradiddle it does not alternate: the same hand leads every time unless you flip it on purpose.

How to practice it

Phrase it as a sextuplet with the accent on note one. Keep both diddles matched: the second one usually comes out weaker. Practice a right-lead bar, then a left-lead bar, since the rudiment will not switch hands for you.

Where you'll hear it

The backbone of gospel chops sextuplet vocabulary and half of every fast triplet lick in modern fusion. Jazz drummers live on this one.
