PAS rudiment #20 · Flam rudiments

lR rL
Flam drum notation with sticking

What it is

A quiet grace note just before a full stroke. Two sticks, two heights, one fat-sounding note.

How to practice it

It is all stick heights. Grace note from about an inch off the head, primary stroke from full height, and the two land almost together: close enough to thicken, far enough apart to not be one note. Practice flat flams (both sticks together) as a fault check, then separate them. Alternate lead hands every stroke.

Where you'll hear it

Accent thickener everywhere: backbeats, tom hits, marching accents, and the front of half the rudiments below.
