Single Drag Tap

PAS rudiment #32 · Drag rudiments

llR L rrL R
Single Drag Tap drum notation, sticking llR L rrL R

What it is

A drag followed by an accented tap on the other hand, alternating. Two main notes with a drag on the front.

How to practice it

The accent goes on the tap. The dragged note stays quiet. That is the traditional voicing and it takes a while to feel natural. Keep the dragged note low and pop the tap. Work it as swung 8ths around 60 to 80 BPM, then straighten it out. You will play both.

Where you'll hear it

Marches and older solos, and it makes a dressed-up backbeat on a drum set.
