PAS rudiment #27 · Flam rudiments

Pataflafla drum notation, sticking lR L R rL

What it is

Four 16th notes with flams on the first and fourth: flam, tap, tap, flam. Say the name and you have the rhythm, pa-ta-fla-fla.

How to practice it

The back-to-back flams at the end of one group and the start of the next are the challenge, because both hands are placing grace notes in quick succession. Slow it down and exaggerate the difference between grace notes and full strokes. When the double flams stop crunching, bring the tempo up.

Where you'll hear it

Old French and Swiss drumming, corps snare breaks, and it is a strong accent figure on the toms.
