Multiple Bounce Roll

PAS rudiment #4 · Roll rudiments

R L R L (buzz)
Multiple Bounce Roll drum notation, sticking R L R L (buzz)

What it is

The buzz roll. Each stroke is pressed into the head so the stick bounces multiple times, and the buzzes overlap into one continuous sound.

How to practice it

Pressure matters more than speed here. Press the bead into the head just enough to get a long, even buzz, and overlap the hands so no gap shows between them. Practice at soft and loud volumes separately. The quiet one is harder, and it is the one you actually get asked for.

Where you'll hear it

Concert snare, orchestral crescendos, press rolls in jazz and big band, and that classic tension build before a chorus.
