Double Stroke Open Roll

PAS rudiment #6 · Roll rudiments

R R L L R R L L
Double Stroke Open Roll drum notation with sticking

What it is

Two strokes per hand, alternating. The foundation of every numbered roll below it and half the hybrid rudiments anyone plays.

How to practice it

Slow doubles are wrist strokes, fast doubles use the rebound. Practice both. At 60 BPM play each note deliberately with the wrist. Above roughly 120 BPM let the stick bounce and use your fingers to match the second note to the first. The second note is always the one that sags, so listen for it specifically.

Where you'll hear it

Everywhere. Roll fills, linear licks between hands and feet, and the engine behind the five, seven, and nine stroke rolls.

All 40 rudiments are built into DrumLock free, with this notation on screen, a metronome, and a speed trainer that ramps the BPM while you play. No ads, no subscriptions.
