Flam Tap

PAS rudiment #22 · Flam rudiments

lR R rL L
Flam Tap drum notation with sticking

What it is

A flam followed by a tap on the same hand: flammed double strokes, alternating.

How to practice it

The trap is the tap dying after the flam. Think of it as a double stroke where the first note wears a grace note, and keep the second note full value. Slow it way down, around 60 BPM in 8th notes, and make the grace note, accent, and tap three distinct heights. Speed comes after the heights are honest.

Where you'll hear it

Marching and rudimental snare all day, plus a great shuffle and half-time groove thickener on the kit.
