Flam Accent

PAS rudiment #21 · Flam rudiments

lR L R rL R L
Flam Accent drum notation, sticking lR L R rL R L

What it is

A triplet with a flam on the first note, alternating lead hands each group. The classic triplet-feel flam rudiment.

How to practice it

Keep the two non-flammed notes low and even, and let the flam carry the accent naturally. The switch of lead hand each triplet is where beginners stumble, so isolate that: one triplet right lead, one triplet left lead, slow, until you stop having to think about the switch. Triplets at 60 to 80 BPM is the range to work in.

Where you'll hear it

6/8 marches, triplet fills, and jazz players who flam the front of each triplet.
