Flam Accent

PAS rudiment #21 · Flam rudiments

lR L R rL R L
Flam Accent drum notation with sticking

What it is

A triplet with a flam on the first note, alternating lead hands each group. The classic triplet-feel flam rudiment.

How to practice it

Keep the two non-flammed notes low and even, and let the flam carry the accent naturally. The switch of lead hand each triplet is where beginners stumble, so isolate that: one triplet right lead, one triplet left lead, slow, until the alternation stops needing thought. 60 to 80 BPM triplets is the pocket.

Where you'll hear it

6/8 marches, triplet-based fills, and jazz phrasing where flams mark the start of each triplet group.
